Navigating the Covid 19 Turbulence in Higher Education: Evidence from Turkish Faculty Members

Covid19 was the first pandemic of modern era to strike with such virulence. We sought understand this recent phenomenon and contribute empirical findings on expectations from HEI leadership management in Turkey. Drawing Turbulence Theory, we explored how academic staff experienced initial phase Turkey they perceived HE leaders’ navigation crisis at selected universities. Within qualitative phenomonology, data semi-structured interviews a convenient sample 10 five public private universities Turkey, analysed through content analysis. Findings highlighted opportunities challenges for faculty personal organizational level an intersectional pattern. Moreover, ways leaders navigated created binaries form experience vs. inexperience trust distrust. The derived rapid but ineffective decision-making processes heightened surveillance mechanisms over staff; which some cases resulted lack trust. Hence, turbulence shaped by their addressed it. In cases, practices building trustworthy connections, more distributive forms robust communication; would help navigate times crises are significant. Further recommendations provided research, policy practice.
